What to Wear for Your Fall Family Photos | Seattle Portrait Photographer

So much goes into a planning a photo shoot. Finding a photographer, selecting a good date, location, and then wardrobe! Once you’ve gotten all the initial things booked, finding the right outfit can make your photo shoot go from good to great! Dare I say, epic! It’s all about finding the right color combos and then finding the outfits that just make you look and feel good!

Styling Tips

  1. Style Mom First

Picking one person to start with will ultimately pave the way for finding complimentary outfits. I say, start with mom! Let’s face it, not only is she often the glue that holds a family together (ahem, I’m not biased at all!) but she also is a big focal point for me in my sessions. As a motherhood photographer, I naturally gravitate towards mom often being center stage in photo shoots! Don’t get me wrong, Dad definitely has a place and is all a part of this, but mama gets to wear the fun, bold and beautiful dress for the portraits! So let’s start with her and build from there. Choosing the main color or a pattern for her will direct how the rest of the outfits will follow.

Begin with this smocked Bella Grey Boutique dress from my client closet and add in a complimentary olive green shirt for Dad. Next, add some flair with this adorable green patterned dress with knee highs and big sis in an ivory high-low ruffle dress from Joyfolie! Complete with a rust colored bow.

2. Pick a Complimentary Color

Choose your main color and then select a complimentary color for a few of the family members (depending on how many you’re dressing). For example, a burnt orange and navy blue will look great together and so will an olive green and rusty red! You can use the color circles below for reference. Keep in mind, adding in neutrals is always a good idea. Ivory & browns will always help balance out any bright and bold colors. I would suggest these for large families so there isn’t an overwhelming amount of the same color. I also recommend thinking about layers, especially for the colder months; such as ivory sweaters and long dusters.

3. Try to Keep it to One Pattern

Two patterns isn’t forbidden, especially if you have a group of more than 4, but I do recommend limiting the amount of patterns you choose for your session. Multiple patterns can clash and tend to distract from the overall photo. To help bring in variety, choose textures like chunky knits, linens, ruffles or even crushed velvet! This will help bring a little added element to your wardrobe without being overwhelming with excessive patterns.

How to Style Fall family photos with maroon, brown and ivory color combo mood board.

You can start off with mom in this maroon, velvety dress from Baltic Born (available to all my clients!) and then daughter in a fun print dress from Joyfolie. Follow it up with this chunky cable knit sweater at H&M and pair with khakis from Old Navy. Lastly, get dad in a simple maroon shirt with a brown sweater to layer!

4. Add in Neutrals and Earth Tones

You can tie everyone together with some neutrals! Adding in some ivory or beige always helps balance out the main colors. Sometimes a session just calls for a minimalist look and I love the simplicity of that too!

You can stick to the basics and stay with mainly neutrals in this color combo. Start off with this crochet bodice dress from my client closet and add in an adorable boho rainbow top for your toddler, also in my client closet! Next choose a henley shirt for your son and this cute striped jumpsuit for baby boy. Lastly, husband can add the color pop with a navy blue button-up!

5. Don’t Forget Accessories, Layers and Shoes

I know the feeling all too well. You have everything laid out, items coordinate well, it’s not too matchy matchy, and you’re feeling good! Then you remember, you don’t have the right shoes for your dress and your daughter doesn’t have anything for her hair! The extra stuff isn’t going to make or break your wardrobe, but it does enhance it! Adding a nice fedora hat or layered cardigan for the cold will add an extra element to your outfits. Hope all these insights and inspiration boards helped!

Mustard yellow and dusty blue color combination for family photos. Fall inspiration ideas for the whole family.

This is one of my favorite color combos! A nice mustard yellow for mom and then complimented by a dusty blue henley for dad. Put baby girl in this adorable romper and moccasins. Lastly, I love these corduroy overalls paired with a blue shirt for your son.
