If you don’t have Amazon Prime in this day and age, you’re missing out! It is my go-to for most of my shopping besides food and really you can’t beat the 2-day free shipping (or sooner). Before I sound like I’m selling Amazon Prime, let me be clear that as a small business owner myself, I believe in supporting the little guys too! I love mom and pop shops and the experience of a brick and mortar store!

But let’s face it, as busy (and often stressed-out moms) it is totally worth it to save time by ordering online! I mean, if we can save ourselves from having to get the kids into the car, drive, get the kids out of the car, shop, and then get the kids back in the car for errands, why wouldn’t we?  Can I hear an AMEN?! Shopping with kids is no joke. And even if the shopping experience goes well, it’s really all the hassle of schlepping them in and out of the car and cart too that can feel like that much more work!

Choosing Outfits for Your Fall Photo Shoot

When you’re preparing for a photo shoot with your family or maternity session, it’s easy to delay getting all the outfits for everyone!  In fact, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the task of shopping in the first place!  If we put it off, then we’re stuck with two options. One, we can find whatever works in our already existing wardrobe and call it “good”. Or we search around on Amazon and inevitably get overwhelmed and just order something—anything that you think will work, but might not necessarily be best.

I’ve been there and done that! I’m here to help get your shopping started. When you’re in a pinch and just need somewhere to start, this post is for you. If you’re interested in my advice on styling the whole family, I have a whole blog on how to style everyone in the family. My first tip has always been to style mom first. This will give you the perfect starting point to style everyone else around her outfit. If mom wants a pattern, then try to get everyone else in solids. If mom wants a solid, then one family member can be in a pattern.

My general rule is that if your family is 5 or less, try to stick to one pattern. Solid colors can get boring I know, so mix it up with textures! My favorite types of textures for photos include lace, velvet, chunky knits or ruffles.

Find an Outfit for Mom First

This is a great rule of thumb to keep things simple and also can be a helpful tip when picking a dress for your maternity session. Not all maternity sessions happen with the first child on the way. Many times, you are pregnant with your second or third child and want to take this opportunity to include the whole family in the session.  Many of the dresses in this post have an empire or a high waist and can be used for maternity shoots as well! I recommend that you choose a solid color for your maternity photos, as this is the best way to show off the baby bump in pictures.

Best Colors for Fall Photos

In this post, I have curated 5 different boards with the best colors or patterns for fall photos. I would suggest choosing a color that will fit well with your location. If you’re shooting in a forest or generally with a lot of greenery, try to find colors that aren’t green so you don’t potentially  blend in. If you’re going to be in a dried, grassy field, avoid a mustard yellow color. I think you get the idea! I universally love a rusty red-orange color for pretty much all seasons. It pops in any photo!

Notice I haven’t included any blue, teal, purple, black, neon colors or pure white. For my style of editing and other reasons these don’t work as well in the fall. I’m not discounting blue or purple altogether, but it’s not particularly a fall color.

As far as black, white and neon colors, these aren’t the best for editing. Neon colors are going to reflect back on your skin and cast a funky color on your face. Pure white is nice, but can look blue in photos. Opt for an ivory, cream or tan if going for light colors.

Lastly, black has its place, but generally when wearing black, it can come out super dark and distracting. The eye is immediately drawn to a dark spot in a photo and can cause you to look elsewhere in the photo when there is just too much contrast with other colors. Generally, I don’t recommend any shade of a color that is dramatically dark!
I hope these tips and inspiration dresses help you out. It’s my goal to always bring value and resources to my readers and clients! If you’re ready to book a fall session, you know where to find me!
