Stangley Family Travels to Tipsoo Lake for a Mountain View Photo Shoot  |  Mt. Rainier Photographer

Family of three sits on rocks at Tipsoo Lake overlooking Mt. Rainier

You know when you feel like you’re in a rut and then you have a super awesome experience that just lifts your spirits? That’s what this session was for me! I had such a wonderful time out in nature at Tipsoo Lake and couldn’t have had a bigger smile on my face during out photo shoot. The Stangley family session was just what I needed to fill my cup and bring life to my photography!

It was a beautiful day in Washington on a sunny September evening. The golden light hit just right, the mountain was peeking out like a painted mural, and Brittany sparkled in her Baltic Born dress! In my opinion, you’d never know it that the Stangley’s hadn’t done family photos since their son was a baby! They were so natural in front of the camera and just among each other. My favorite part was watching the sunset over Mt. Rainier and seeing all the beauty this gorgeous national park has to offer.

When to Do a Photo Shoot at Tipsoo Lake

Weather and road status around Mt. Rainier National Park plays a big factor on when you can take photos up at Tipsoo Lake. Surprisingly, even as late as June, there can still be snow up at this beautiful spot.

The best time to book a photo shoot at Tipsoo Lake would be between July and October. Midsummer is when the wildflowers start to spring up and create a lovely texture to the fields out there. It’s one of the reasons I love it so much and why it made my list of top 5 places for wildflower pictures!

By October, there’s definitely a higher chance of rain and eventually snow in that area. Getting your family or maternity photos done by early fall is a great way to have plenty of time to order announcements and Christmas cards.

Parking and Trails Around Tipsoo Lake

One reason I love this spot so much is because even though it might be a long drive for some, the parking and walking is totally manageable! We have breathtaking scenery and views all around us and there is no true hiking involved!  The parking is right next to the trails and nearly all the trails are flat, so it takes very little effort to get around. It’s not necessarily stroller-friendly, as the paths aren’t paved, but if you really need to, you could get a stroller/wagon around if absolutely necessary.

It is very important to stay on the trails at this location. Mt. Rainier National Park rangers do monitor this area and in order to keep the wildlife and plants safe and well-kept, it’s a stern rule to stay on all marked pathways. But don’t worry, we can totally make it work with what we are given and everywhere you turn, there’s beauty!

You can find a parking lot at the Tipsoo Lake Comfort Station and there are also spots off the side of the road. Pro tip: Use the bathroom before you leave the house! The bathroom here is dark and pretty gross, lol!
